The Martian by Andy Weir

Great books tend to be made into movies, and The Martian by Andy Weir is no exception. When a book is made into a movie it is usually best to read the book first, however that's not always possible - particularly if you didn't know there was a book! The Martian is one of the times when I got to read the book before I saw the movie, and I'm glad I did.

About The Martian

I’m stranded on Mars.

I have no way to communicate with Earth.

I’m in a Habitat designed to last 31 days.

If the Oxygenator breaks down, I’ll suffocate. If the Water Reclaimer breaks down, I’ll die of thirst. If the Hab breaches, I’ll just kind of explode. If none of those things happen, I’ll eventually run out of food and starve to death.

So yeah. I’m screwed.

Intriguing right? What I love about the synopsis is it doesn't tell you about the characters or what's happening, the main character, Mark Watney, does that himself. It's great.

My thoughts about The Martian

I don't enjoy reading overly scientific books. I didn't get a university degree and I'm not one of those people that can decipher science speak. So when the Hubby suggested I read The Martian, after telling me it was quite scientific when he was reading it, I didn't hurry to read. It took the Hubby a while to convince me, but I'm glad he did.

Like I said, overly scientific books are too much work but, that said, I do enjoy some science in books. One of my favourite reads is State of Fear by Michael Crichton and that has lots of science and actual science to back up some of his theories. I can cope with science but it's when it gets complicated and the writer starts talking specifics my mind starts to question what's going on. While there needs to be science in The Martian it's not complicated and despite it being set on Mars Andy Weir writes in such a way that it's easy to understand what's going on.

The book pulled me in and I was engrossed, rooting for Mark Watney the whole time. It has an intriguing story with exciting twists, it is well written making the science stuff easy to understand, and I read through it quickly.

I would definitely recommend The Martian by Andy Weir.

Do you enjoy science topics in the books you read?
